Hi Hustle Crew! I want to develop some new habits in my life to help me engage more with my privilege and have more empathy for folks from different backgrounds who could be facing structural oppression that I do not experience myself. Is there one new habit or activity you can suggest I start with?

Hi! Abadesi here. I’m so encouraged to hear you want to create new habits, that’s how we create lasting change. One-off actions aren’t enough, as recent events like Black Lives Matter marches have shown us. I think one powerful new habit to create is diversifying the content you consume. Let’s start with podcasts, for example. Who are the hosts of the podcasts you have on heavy rotation? Do they share the same race and gender as you? Why not challenge yourself to increase the proportion of content you consume that’s created by folks from different identities. Listen to content created by Black and brown creators, by folks in the queer community, by folks in the disabled community – and anyone else whose lived experience differs from your own. It’s a powerful way to start seeing the world through their eyes.
